The Starving Activist is the sometimes-home for words. AR Neal (that’s me) finds them, cultivates them, and leaves them here. Enjoy.

Introducing Marlena Jacoby: Countdown to "After"

The topic of the Rapture as described in the (Bible) Book of Revelation continues to interest writers, including this one. I find it interesting that shows such as The Leftovers and movies like Left Behind are coming out this year, along with my book, After.I started on this journey some time ago and in preparation for availability this fall, I thought I'd take time to introduce you to some of the characters. We'll begin with Mrs. Marlena Jacoby, to whom we are introduced from the start of the story.

Marlena Jacoby is a young married professional who works as chief accountant at Simmons Logistics, one of the largest transport corporations in the world. She is generally a practical woman and has struggled with her understanding of faith. She is married to Darius Jacoby, a successful man in his own right; Darius has maintained a strong faith through his membership at Fellowship Baptist. Darius' parents were members and he attended throughout his youth; he joined the church 17 years before he and Marlena had their first date. His dedicated service has garnered him a position as a Bible study leader; he holds study at their home (which is located in the northwestern region of the United States) once a week. Attendees include a small group of his friends/co-workers/fellow church members. Marlena does not attend the meetings. We find that Marlena's life trajectory has taken her in a different direction. Her parents attended service at their local Presbyterian church, but were in no way as connected to their church community as Darius or his family of origin were throughout his life. Marlena's aunts and uncles follow their own faith practices but physical distance has prevented Marlena from engaging with them much during her adult life. She has maintained some connection with her Uncle Vern, who lives in Tucson, Arizona. Marlena loves Darius, but part of her desired more. It was this desire that led her to start regular visits to Jack's Tap Out, the local watering hole, where she enjoyed dancing and drinks with co-workers, Shonda Bickman and Roscoe David Kirkpatrick.Global events will cause Marlena to question her actions, her understanding, and ultimately her faith.

And there you have it! I plan to introduce a new character or theme each week until the book's release. Please spread the word and I hope you will pick up a copy (or two!).
